About Me

I’m Helen and I’m a children’s bookseller and owner of Wonderland Bookshop in Retford, North Nottinghamshire. Wonderland is a children’s bookshop and as far as I know, might just be the only bookshop in the world with an upside down tea party on the ceiling. I can’t take the credit for the décor, but I will absolutely take the compliments.

Isn’t Wonderland cute?

When I was little, I always wanted to have my own bookshop, as well as being an author. I began working as a bookseller on a part-time basis in 2019 in a secondhand bookshop in Retford, where I live. The owner later opened a secondhand children’s bookshop in the same town and when they made the decision to close in the autumn of 2019, I knew I had to try to make one of my dreams come true. Prior to this, I had been freelancing, working as the Head of Communications and PR for a national governing body.

I’m new to the trade and I’ve learned on the job. I’m not perfect and there is a lot to learn. But I’m passionate and I love books, two vital qualities when it comes to running a bookshop.

When I’m not reading or in the bookshop, I’m working on my own middle grade novel, or doing duties as a district councillor. I have an eight year old who loves comic strips, I’m partial to cake, and I hope to get back to tenpin bowling (my other passion) sometime soon.
